Adaptation Versus Inspiration

Mark Ciocco:

Does The Dark Knight Rises succumb to the [weight of expectation]? Perhaps, but it’s as good as I could have ever expected. It’s certainly miles ahead of [Spider-Man 3 and X-Men: The Last Stand], even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor. It’s worth taking a look at why The Dark Knight was so successful. To my mind, it’s because that movie transcended its origins.

Piecing together my own thoughts on the film is proving difficult — for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado — but I am trying to organize myself in such a way that I, at the very least, sound coherent. Until I can manage that, I suggest you check out the rest of Mark’s piece. It is an excellent review of The Dark Knight Rises as well as an examination of final movie and where it stands in relation to other adaptations from comic books.
