The Transforming Aspect

I liked the transforming aspect of the game: I came to the field one thing—a diffident guy with a slack body—and worked like a dog and so became something else—a guy with some physical prowess and more faith in himself.

This entire piece is fantastic, but the conclusion reached regarding the dual-nature of sports is true of most things. Technological revenge. All technologies contain with them the capacity for both utopia and apocalypse.

It is so rarely the tools or the technologies that are at fault, but the manner in which they are utilized that is to blame.
